Funny thing about music, all kinds of music. You take four or five people, a handful of instruments ranging from a hollow block of hardwood to a thing with three sets of keyboards and a bank of electronic controls, add a bunch of stringed boxes, horns and whistles, and you're almost ready. The players can range from conservatory-trained musicians to those who learned on a hand-me-down guitar, self-taught in the garage out back. It sometimes helps if one or two can carry a tune.

Sounds too simple, but it makes a difference if everybody loves the music and gives himself up to it completely. That's when the magic happens.

Sterlin Colvin and the gang have learned how to make the magic happen. Colvin, with his talented wife, Shuvette, found a musical haven when they came to the Carolina Low Country about eight years ago. Still a young man, Colvin had already established himself as a successful, dynamic musician with the charismatic leadership to attract all the elements of an exciting ensemble of musicians. And the leadership qualities to mold them into an effective unit.

Here is a guy - Sterlin Colvin - who hails from the D.C. area, but has covered the world. He attended the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, from which he toured much of Europe. As Keyboardist and vocalist with several other ensembles, he toured the U.S. and Canada. His musical accomplishments have gained him numerous awards from various American Universities, including Lincoln and Morgan Universities. Improv has already built a following throughout the coastal region and, with Hilton Head Island and its several millions of visitors as a base, has been steadily spreading the magic of its good sounds far and wide.

Well known for a fabulously extensive playlist of beloved standards from virtually every idiom, every genre and every era, Improv gives to each style and an expression all their own. Marching at point in Improv's vanguard is Dave News. With slightly more than two years with the group, Dave's driving lead guitar soars into the stratosphere, carrying audience and all to new heights. Dave's first guitar came into his waiting hands as a Christmas gift. Growing up in a tough neighborhood, Dave credits tight focus on his instrument as probably saving his young life, as it drew him first to a nearby community college and later to studies in classical and Spanish guitar at world famous Howard University.

Both vocally and with their guitars, Dave and Clarence - Clarence Williams, who plays bass guitar - create a melodic blend that is a joy to hear. Clarence has been on Hilton Head for the past six years, earlier with a very popular group called "Rosco". To say Jimmy Charles has his finger on the pulse of the music is literally true, because he is the pulse of the music. His drumming drives, guides, lifts instruments and voices alike in a unified, rhythmic flow.

Leon Rivchun is a phenomenon in his own right. Whether Leon plays saxophone or flute, whatever the style or idiom, prepare yourself for a rare treat. Whether joining the ensemble or in pure solo flight, this man transcends. He and the music become one. A native New Englander, this man has an awesome background - study at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), performance at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival and the World's Fair, plus opening for the likes of Steve Morse and Bonnie Raitt.

Then, you might ask, "How does a little girl from Memphis find herself singing with a rising rock group?" Little Shuvette Walton started playing piano by age eight, later drawn into gospel music from the influence of groups like the Williams Brothers and The Mighty Clouds of Joy. A turning moment came when she was heard by the immortal Ma Rainey. Credited with the discovery of Billy Holiday, Ma Rainey urged the young Shuvette, who urged her to seek a solo career, starting at Memphis' famous Blues Alley. Shuvette went on to study voice and music at Lincoln University, in Missouri, and to perform with their award-winning jazz vocal ensemble. She also encountered there another life-changing personality, a charming, talented young student named Sterlin Colvin.

Whether performing a soulful gospel tune or intoning a jazz tune loaded with get-down meaning, the crowds love her. If a rock group can have a diva, Shuvette is the one. And Sterlin Colvin and Improv are the group.

Come hear for yourself !!!

Mike McSwain of Mike and the Mixers says,"I think the biggest reason brides and their parents are happy with us is that we create elegance in the beginning of the reception, but we're able to shift gears when the time is right and create a party and dance atmosphere. Practically every wedding reception we play begins very elegantly but winds up being a heck of a party."

In the 1960's, songs like "My Girl", "Stand By Me", and "Soul Man" took their place in American music history. Motown had gone mainstream, and soul music finally was getting the "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" it deserved. It was during these years of the 60's that the members of The Great Society Band grew their roots.

Drummer/lead vocalist Frank Macaulay collected hundreds (if not thousands) of soul 45 RPM records throughout the 60's. He'd sing along, learning countless tunes of artists like James Brown, Wilson Pickett, and Ben E. King. In 1964, Frank bought his first set of drums and never stopped drumming. Frank Went on to perform with numerous bands which toured around the country, playing drums and singing as a featured vocalist. Today, Frank's specialty is his mellow baritone voice, which shines on the band's selection of beach music, a brand of soul music particularly popular along the south-Atlantic coast.

In the mid 1960's, female vocalist Nadine Taylor was faced with a delightful dilemma. She had just started college and was singing in a local band in the Columbia, SC area. Her group appeared as an opening act for a nationally-known female soul group. Nadine's talent really stood out, the other group's manager was duly impressed, and soon after, Nadine was offered a position in the star group. Torn between a college education and fame as a singer, Nadine (with "gentle persuasion" from her family) opted to stay in school. She went on to become an elementary school teacher, but she has always been in demand as a vocalist in various bands around South Carolina. Her gospel roots and influences are her strength, and she still finds time to sing in her church choir.

Classically trained from age six, keyboardist, vocalist and band leader Cleve Edwards, got his first transistor radio in the 60's around age ten. Late one night, he discovered WOIC, the local soul radio station in Columbia, SC, and was forever changed. Luckily large for his early teen years, Cleve began to easily enter night clubs to play in bands from age thirteen on through high school. During the 60's, he would also frequently slip into Columbia's all-black clubs to hear his soul heroes of the day. From the mid 60's to today, Cleve has been an artist signed to mainstream records, toured in the 70's with national recording acts, earned music and media arts degrees, wrote and produced music for the Public Broadcasting System, owned a recording studio, and played just about every type of music from rock to jazz to country to soul, even ethnic Greek and Jewish music.

Guitarist Chick Bayless and saxophonist Ron Watson came along musically after the 1960's, but the influences of that era are still plentiful. Chuck's roots are solidly in rock %26 blues, counting as influences blues icons such as Albert King, Eric Clapton, and B.B. King. Today, Chuck is highly sought after as a sideman and studio musician in the midland South Carolina area. He also collects and deals vintage guitars and is an expert guitar repairman. Saxophonist Ronald Watson got a great deal of his training in the U.S. Army Band. His experience in the service also took him literally around the world playing his instrument. Ron's influences are highly rooted in jazz and soul music, and one can hear traces of Grover Washington, Stanley Turrentine, and even Stan Getz in Ron's soulful style.

The Great Society Band is like one big tapestry of many rich hues and textures. Five distinct individuals playing a wide variety of music; from sophisticated jazz to funky soul music to pumping rock; that's what's in the name......The Great Society Band.

First Class Entertainment

"One of the most exceptional group of performers you will ever have the pleasure of experiencing."

"Bands like The Fabulous Classics are rare- these performers are a total package, first class act!"

"Conventions and weddings... what fun! Why would anyone want to risk investing in another band when they could have The Fabulous Classics!"

Having performed throughout the entire US, and Europe, The Fabulous Classics have collaborated with and opened for the greats of the music industry including Aaron Neville %26 The Neville Brothers, Kool %26 the Gang, The Atlanta Rhythm Section, The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Ink Spots, Archie Bell, Bill Deal %26 the Rhondells, Little Anthony, Percy Sledge, James Brown and Michael McDonald just to name a few.

When you need first class entertainment and nothing else will do - The Fabulous Classics will provide an experience you won't soon forget.

Our Philosophy; Seasoned and Professional entertainers bringing classic R%26B, Soul, Motown and Carolina Beach to our audiences; focusing on entertaining guests without offensive volume levels. We believe harmony should be paramount, and music should be LIVE! THE COPPERTONES; preventing good people from hiring bad bands.

Judy Marshall
Featured vocalist (and cute as a button), Judy's harmonies and lead vocals bring a versatility to The Coppertones few can match. Her sultry stylings were learned as a backup singer in Nashville, working with The Jordanaires and as a backup singer for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member PERCY SLEDGE.

Jim Hensley
Jim hails from the home of James Brown, Steve Morse, and Mike Ritchie. His "Steve Cropper style" has been learned on the road, and in the studio. He's also the one all the women are drawn to.

Tom Moran
Tom has worked with both THE SOUND DOGS, THE VILLAGERS and JUMP THE GUN. Tom brings a solid dancable groove all night long. The backbone of the 'Tones!

JR Ryan
A veteran of the 'Jersey shore bar scene, an area that produced BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY. JR brings a solid bottom to the mix, working in sync with Tom to deliver a tight groove. He also adds the tenor to the 'Tones tight harmonies. JR is also a walking encyclopedia of useless musical trivia (hence the Rainman reference).

Larry Williams
An R%26B devotee, Larry provides the "Hammond growl". A founding member of the legendary 70's frat band ARG, and served as a member of MAJOR LANCES' backup band during the mid 70's. They call him "The Britches". No one seems to know why...

Richard Fowler
He started playing in bands at 13. Rich hails from the home of classic R%26B, and hung out around the old Stax studio as a kid, before working with a top Memphis band side-by-side with Tommy James, and Al Green and opening for Dr. John. A featured performer in Memphis and was a frequent guest at Momma's Blues Palace in Charleston.
